Home based. Tattooing independently. First time starting out on my own with my tattoo business. What are the fastest and most simple numbers I can get and need to start? Hi Jose, the first number you need is a sales tax ID number because services like that are taxable and paraphernalia sold with it is taxable as well. The other number is a business tax registration number also called a business license. Your "Big Yatos, Ink," business name has to be filed as a corporation and finally you need an EIN. That said, you may need a health and hygiene inspection in your business having to do with health involvement such as skin penetration.

Here is a list of tax number ids you need to start your own San Diego small company.

All Businesses need a(n) , San Diego business tax id registration (business license).

All Businesses that use a business name to trade that is other than the surname and first name of a sole proprietor or a fictitious business name other than the LLC or Corporation legal name need a(n) San Diego County   DBA ( doing business as ) fictitious business name.

On the other hand you may also need a sales tax ID AKA seller's permit if you sell merchandise that is taxable.  (A.K.A San Joseseller's permit, state id, wholesale, resale, reseller certificate).

In addition you will need a federal and a state EIN if you will hire employees. I.e., a CA Federal Tax Id Number and a(n) CA  State Employer Tax Number

Instead of filing a fictitious business name DBA Filing in San Diego, Incorporate in CA  or form a(n) CA LLC

Actually there is not just one but four tax ID numbers. First there is a general business tax registration ID. Second there is a state reseller number. Third there is a state EIN number and a federal EIN number.

New businessess whether home or other types will need a general tax registration that could be a business permit and or license. Sole proprietors just need that plus perhaps a registration of a business name certificate if in fact the business is using an assumed business name. E.g. if the business is called "Superior Medical Billing" it will need to file a DBA. Other than that employer sole owners will need both a federal ein and a state ein and if selling any type of widgets such as items on eBay or Etsy will need a state reseller number also called a seller ID or resale number. In addition if the new business whether home business online or commercial location it will need to file a DBA doing business as certificate if in fact is doing business and using a trade name. If you select a sole proprietorship you will need at a minimum a business tax registration (business license) and a trade business name registration.

Filing a DBA is not required if you will set up an LLC or form a Corporation. Finally if you will have more than one owner you will need to obtain a federal tax id number to indentify the partnership. There is a cicrcumstance that you may not need to register a trade name and that is when you use your full name as a business name if you use your full legal name as a trade name. Also note that even using your first and last name may not help you avoid filing a DBA if the name has a suffix such as "& sons" etc.

Industry Numbers and Capital Requirements

Let's kick things off with some tattoo industry numbers that might make you want to ink them on your arm:
  • The global tattoo market is expected to reach $3.4 billion by 2027
  • About 30% of Americans have at least one tattoo
  • The average cost of a tattoo ranges from $50 to $300 per hour
  • Now, for the not-so-fun part: startup costs. You'll need about $5,000 to $10,000 to get your home-based tattoo business off the ground. This includes equipment like tattoo machines, needles, inks, and sterilization equipment. Don't forget a comfy chair for your clients – unless you want them squirming more than usual during their session!

    Business Essentials

First things first, you'll need an EIN (Employer Identification Number). Think of it as a Social Security number for your business. It's used for tax purposes and opening business bank accounts. It's like getting your first tattoo – a bit scary at first, but essential for your business journey. Next up, you'll likely need to register your business name. This prevents other artists from stealing your cool tattoo shop name. You'll also need to decide on a business structure. An LLC (Limited Liability Company) is popular among small business owners as it provides personal asset protection. It's like a force field for your personal finances!

    Licenses and Permits

You'll need a few key licenses and permits to operate legally:
  • Business License: The basic permission slip to run your business
  • Tattoo Artist License: Proves you're qualified to wield that needle
  • Health Department Permit: Shows you're not operating out of a dark alley
  • A Seller's Permit (also known as a Sales Tax Permit) is necessary if you're selling products like aftercare items or merchandise. It allows you to collect sales tax from customers. Think of it as the government's way of getting a tiny tattoo on every sale you make.

    Special Considerations

Since you're operating from home, you might need a Home Occupation Permit. This ensures your neighbors won't freak out about a parade of tattooed individuals coming and going. Also, don't forget about insurance! Professional Liability Insurance is crucial in case a client isn't happy with their "No Ragrets" tattoo. Remember, starting a home-based tattoo business is like creating a full-back piece – it takes time, patience, and attention to detail. But with the right preparation, you'll be making your mark in no time!
